Phoenix Hotel
The place
A 1950s motel in the Tenderloin, brought back to life. In its earlier years the Phoenix drew artists — David Bowie and Kurt Cobain among them — and the San Francisco hotel keeps that chic retro spirit, made with the traveling musician in mind.
The 44 rooms and suites keep things simple. White walls, vintage furniture, sharp accents of red, blue, and yellow. Plush bedding, a work desk, a Bluetooth speaker, a TV with HBO, free wifi. Nothing more than needed.
At the center, a heated oval pool. White lounge chairs and striped cabanas ring the water, greenery softening the edges. Chambers Eat + Drink, the moody in-house restaurant and lounge, serves New American dishes.
