The place

A hillside east of Carlsbad, about fifty minutes from downtown San Diego, that reads like the French countryside. Cal-a-Vie gathers historic stone structures and Mediterranean houses on the slope, given over entirely to rest.

The 32 suites and villas carry the same old-world calm — vintage furniture, Travertine-tiled bathrooms, Italian Frette linens, a private sundeck or balcony for the morning light.

Wellness is the whole point. Two outdoor pools look over the greenery; a spa, a fitness center, and tennis and pickleball courts fill the hours between. The kitchen works farm to table with seasonal produce. The house wine deserves a slow evening.
