The place

On Sumba, an Indonesian island east of Bali, a beachfront hotel at the shoreline of a coral reef, untouched farmland at its back. GFAB Architects folded traditional Sumbanese structures into a modern frame.

The 64 studios, suites, and villas share wooden furnishings, private balconies, curated artwork, and ceramics.

The infinity pool holds an unbroken line of Indian Ocean. Malala Spa works with organic treatments; the gym occupies a converted hut. Three places to eat and drink — among them the open-air Beach Club, part Mediterranean, part Indonesian, and Julang, for a slower fine-dining evening.
