The place

Hotel Wailea rests on a hilltop above the Maui coast — an adults-only sanctuary across 15 verdant acres. The 72 one-bedroom suites, at 750 square feet, are among the largest on the island. Each is quietly tropical: Ohia wood furniture, a soaking tub, a living area with kitchenette, and a private lanai.

Days pass between the outdoor pool and hot tub, an aerial yoga studio, and a scenic open-air fitness studio. Beach gear and luxury shuttle services are there when you want them.

The kitchen is in the hands of chef Ryan Cruz. The Birdcage is a Japanese grill of bold, smoky flavors; The Restaurant, an award-winning room with sweeping island views.
