The place

A 1907 lodge on six shorefront acres in Coupeville, on Whidbey Island. Renovated with a light hand, the rustic timber holds its history while the rooms move gently forward. There are 30 of them — historic lodge rooms, lagoon rooms, cabins — the lagoon rooms leaning quietly Scandinavian.

The days furnish themselves: a private lagoon, row boats, a chef's garden, lawn games, bicycles. The island's wilder edges are close when you want them.

The Restaurant at Captain Whidbey cooks from the Pacific Northwest — locally inspired, unhurried. At the General Store, the Espresso Bar handles morning coffee and breakfasts to carry down to the water.
