Fogo Island Inn

The place

A remote island off the northeastern coast of Newfoundland, and a striking contemporary building sitting quietly on it. The sustainable retreat is the passion project of local native Zita Cobb; 100 percent of revenue surpluses return to the charity Shorefast, reinvested in the community.

The facade is mostly locally-sourced wood. In the rooms and suites, the furniture and textiles are hand-crafted by local artisans. There is a cinema, a fitness center, a reading room, a gallery, saunas — and rooftop hot tubs open to the sky. In the dining room, a refined menu of local vegetables and North Atlantic seafood.
