The place

On Fukue, the largest of the Goto Islands, a narrow 1980s concrete house in the heart of the shopping district has had its outer walls taken away. What remains is a house open to the air, the line between indoors and out gone quiet.

There are three rooms. Exposed concrete sets the tone, finished sparely in wood and metal, while overgrown greenery reaches through the broken-down walls. At the edge of each room, a semi-open-air space has become the bathroom — you bathe with the island around you.
