San Agustinillo, Mexico
Monte Uzulu
The place
Monte Uzulu hides in the mountains above San Agustinillo, a small beach town in Oaxaca, wrapped in jungle a thousand years old. The sustainable hotel is built from what surrounds it — wood, soil, dried palm leaves.
The 11 cosy suites, designed by Taller LU'UM, pair exposed concrete walls with wooden and rattan furniture made by local artisans. Each has a large wooden shutter; open it, and the Pacific and the jungle fill the frame from a private terrace.
Beyond the rooms, idyllic outdoor corners for doing nothing, and a recently added outdoor plunge pool. The open-air restaurant serves organic food from small local producers.
