The Shinmonzen
The place
The Shinmonzen keeps a low profile in Gion — a black Japanese Machiya house on a historic Kyoto street, reworked by Tadao Ando and a circle of artist friends. The result is a modern reading of the ryokan, contemporary yet faithful to traditional Japanese design.
Nine suites, each with its own temperament. White and wood, contemporary decor, custom artwork. Then the details: a cypress soaking tub, a sage marble vanity, hand-woven carpets, a spacious private balcony over the Shirakawa River.
The kitchen is led by French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, moving between French, American, and Asian influences on an ever-changing menu. The bar keeps a curated list of sakes and cocktails.
