The Surfrider Malibu
The place
On the Pacific Coast Highway, The Surfrider Malibu is a former motel turned Californian beach house. Shaped by the Malibu landscape and its surf culture, the design stays breezy and coastal — white walls, light wood, nothing extra.
Its 20 rooms and suites hold custom furniture by local designers, reclaimed teak floors, and hand-painted ceramic bathroom tiles. Italian Bellino linens on the bed, Grown Alchemist in the bath, and a private terrace outside with a hammock strung across it.
The hotel lends stand-up paddle boards, umbrellas, beach baskets, towels, and sunscreen. Upstairs, the Roof Deck Bar and Restaurant serves a Coastal-Californian menu built from organic local produce.
