The place

A slim contemporary building in San Diego's Hillcrest, its black and white facade deliberately mismatched. Design studio RED Office shaped the interiors — chic, contemporary, with industrial touches and the occasional flash of bright color.

The 23 stays split into cabins, lofts, and a penthouse, each with its own personality and configuration. Some cabins are washed in vibrant blue; others lean mid-century. Every one has a kitchenette, which suits a longer stay.

On the ground floor, Gooseberries Kafe — a family-owned bakery, delicatessen, grill, and cafe, open all day for beverages and casual dishes. The neighborhood does the rest; Arrivederci Ristorante, among the best pizzerias in town, is close.
