The place

Beside Bacalar Lagoon, hidden in lush forest, Frida Escobedo's 22 treehouses hold traditional Japanese architecture and Mexican modernism in the same breath. One or two bedrooms each — bespoke furnishings, Vivenda linens, an outdoor shower, a private terrace facing the trees.

The lagoon is crystalline and close. Sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding; or the lagoon deck, and stillness. Back on land, a pool with Bali beds, a petanque court, a nature-inspired spa.

Flora runs the kitchen from breakfast to dinner, an open-air room built on fresh local ingredients and vibrant Mexican flavours.
