Detroit Foundation Hotel occupies the city's former fire department, a neoclassical brick building in Downtown Detroit. Studio KTGY refurbished it with a classy industrial hand — black metal, dark wooden accents, original elements preserved.
The 100 rooms and suites come in white, burgundy, and pale blue, furnished with local work: iron-welded door handles from Smith Shop, leather trays from Douglas & Co. Sumptuous bedding, a work desk, Grown Alchemist toiletries, free wifi.
A modern 24-hour fitness center covers machines, equipment, and free weights. The one restaurant on-site is among the city's best: The Apparatus Room, where chef Rece Hogerheide plates share-style New American cooking from Michigan's finest ingredients.
