Byron Bay, Australia
Raes on Wategos
The place
On the eastern edge of Byron Bay, a whitewashed villa built around the 1960s and 70s — the kind of structure you would expect along the Mediterranean coastline, not an Australian surf town.
There are only 7 suites and penthouses. Each is crafted with bespoke tiles, rattan furniture, vintage objects, and marble accents, with a sunken bathtub and a private balcony of its own.
Within the grounds, a free-form pool and garden, rumoured to have been designed by Salvador Dalí. The in-house spa offers a selection of luxurious treatments.
At Raes Dining Room, executive chef Jason Saxby cooks modern Australian with a Mediterranean flair. Cellar Bar handles the lighter hours — refined drinks, light dishes.
