The place
Zagame's House stands in Carlton, just north of Melbourne's CBD, in what was once a budget motel. Interlandi Mantesso Architects repainted the facade jet black and let bold graphics carry it; inside, the design runs industrial — modern furnishing, black metal accents.
The 97 rooms and suites work in white, grey, and wood, sharpened by intricate furnishings and industrial touches. The essentials are all present: comfortable bedding, a TV, a work desk, coffee facilities, free wifi.
A 24-hour gym holds free weights and machines. Food is the main event here. Lord Lygon, led by award-winning chef Chris Bonello, offers refined dining and more than 300 wines from local and international vineyards. 1851 Coffee + Kitchen, a communal cafe, handles the casual hours with a modern fusion menu.
