The place

Nineteenth-century warehouses on the Vila Nova de Gaia bank, the Douro just outside. Metro Urbe kept the industrial bones — exposed ceilings, modern decor, curated objects, nothing over-dressed.

The 103 rooms run from studios to three-bedroom suites, each closer to an artist's residence than a hotel room. A white and neutral palette, mid-century furniture, the occasional pop of color. A full kitchen, plush bedding, a Marshall speaker on the shelf.

The indoor pool is the still center of it all, drawn in an Ancient Roman style. A fitness center and sauna sit nearby. Four places to eat and drink, among them Pot & Pan, cooking modern Portuguese from local seasonal produce.
