The place

Two listed 19th-century buildings in Charlottenburg — an ivory courthouse and an abandoned red brick prison — turned by Grüntuch Ernst Architects into something improbably calm. The facades stand as they were; inside, everything softens into creamy shades and garden green.

The 44 rooms and suites stay simple: white, minimal wooden furnishing, historic windows, pressed flowers and leaves. COCO-MAT bedding and Frama bath products round it out.

Stillness is the point. A rooftop terrace with a plunge pool, a sauna, a 24-hour gym, a luxuriant garden, a billiard room, a library, a lounge. At Lovis, Sophia Rudolph cooks contemporary German food from seasonal, regional produce.
